Richmond is a town in the Washington County which is situated in the Rhode Island United States. The population was about 8000 in the year 2008. The villages of usquepaug, Kenyon and Shannock are situated in the Richmond.

History
The town of Richmond which is now situated in Rhode Island was originally a part of the territory of Westerly, Rhode Island (1669 to 1747), and this remained in dispute for several years among the British Colonies of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

In 1665, Charles II, the King of England, dissolved the different charters of the three colonies in dispute, assumed governance, and renamed the area King’s County. In May of 1669, the General Assembly of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations organized King’s County into the town of Westerly. Subsequent to this the town of Westerly organized itself into four separate areas: Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton.

Richmond, Rhode Island was incorporated as a separate and distinct township in 1747. It is bounded on the north by the town of Exeter, on the west by the Wood River, on the east by the towns of Exeter and South Kingstown, and on the south by the Pawcatuck River.

Previous to both Colony and British rule the southern area of Rhode Island, encompassing Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton was inhabited and ruled by the Narragansett Indian Tribe.

Geography
The Richmond is situated 30 miles south of the capital providence, Rhode Island. The city of Richmond is almost forested throughout. I really feel that the Richmond is one of the places which are really gifted as far as the natural beauty is concerned. I have been in this part of the US.

You can really think of settling permanently in Richmond. The lush greenery around is really very pleasing and I do hope that you will enjoy the country life.

The Carolina is a historical district in Charlestown and Richmond which are situated in the Rhode Island. You will find here the Greek revival as well as the Queen Anne Style of architecture.

All of these are quiet important as far as the American history is concerned. I do hope that whenever you will decide to make a trip to Richmond then you will definitely like to visit these places. This area was registered in national register of the historical places in the year 1974.

The green animal topiary garden is located in the Portsmouth which is situated in the Rhode Island. This is the oldest topiary garden as far as the United States is concerned. It contains so much topiary that you will find yourself lost among them. Either it is teddy bear, giraffe, unicorn, reindeer or any other creature; you will find them all being sculptured out of plants. This art can be thought of as the same as the art in which various shapes are being made out of the sand on the sea shore.

You will find here over 35 formal flowerbeds, geometric pathways, rose arbor, grape arbor, fruit trees, and vegetable and herb gardens. There is also one greenhouse which is used extensively to provide seedlings used on the estate. The 1859 Victorian Brayton house museum contains a small display of vintage kid’s toy and the original family furnishings. Ribbons for prize-winning dahlias and vegetables, dating from about 1915, line the walls of the gift shop. This great garden is being preserved by the Preservation Society of Newport County which looks after its maintenance.

This garden was formed by Thomas Brayton in the year 1872. He really had in his mind to make a summer recreation site and for this he bought a small country estate in Portsmouth.

Brayton was the treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company in nearby Fall River, Massachusetts and he had in his mind and was looking for the country summer retreat. It consisted of 7 acres (28,000 m2) of land, a white clapboard summer residence, farm outbuildings, a pasture and a vegetable garden. The main Victorian home looked out on Narragansett Bay.

It was Gardener Joseph Carreiro, who was superintendent of the property from 1905 to 1945 and it was he who slowly transformed it into a museum of living sculpture. Carreiro was recruited to design and maintain ornamental and edible gardens as part of a self-sufficient estate. In addition to planting fruit trees, perennial beds, herb and vegetable gardens, Carreiro researched with some fast-growing shrubs to distinctive forms. The first topiaries were started in the estate’s greenhouse in 1912 and later moved.

In the year 1939 Mr. Brayton died and his daughter Alice Brayton took up everlasting residence in 1940. Joseph Carreiro was assisted by his son-in-law, George Mendonca. Both of these gardeners were really responsible for creating the topiaries. Mendonca, who was the son of a nurseryman and dairy farmer, was hired to make repairs in the Brayton garden after a hurricane damaged it in 1938. Mendonca married Carreiro’s daughter, Mary, and together they have lived on the grounds overlooking Narragansett Bay.

I really feel that this garden which they developed was really a masterpiece.

At WaterFire, you will get an opportunity to witness a magical evening, with a romantic environ, as you and your spouse take a stroll along the cobblestone walks alongside the river canal, moving through downtown Providence Rhode Island. Restaurants that bound the area are bustling with patrons, and food vendors are set up on the small stone bridges that arch the river canal.

As it is, WaterFire Providence is fast becoming one of the most famous tourist attractions across the world. It was established with the purpose of continuing the WaterFire sculpture installation and it soon became a major establishment, with the growing popularity of WaterFire sculpture. This magnificent event is a great platform for showcasing the creation, exhibition and performance of works of art by visual and performing artists, both in and out of the State of Rhode Island.

The initiative to this magnificent event, called WaterFire was taken way back in 1994, when Barnaby Evans created First Fire as a commission to celebrate the tenth anniversary of First Night Providence. Then, in June 1996, Evans created Second Fire for the International Sculpture Conference, which was a huge hit, as it emerged as a gathering place for thousands of participants from all over the world.
Eventually, art supporters at the event were able to convince Evans to create an on-going fire installation and started a grass-roots effort to establish WaterFire as a non-profit arts organization. This took the shape of the renaissance, which we witness today.

Contributions from corporate leaders and support from the City and State, enthusiastic assistance from hundreds of dedicated volunteers and generous donations from many individuals, helped WaterFire emerge as an Artists paradise, attracting art lovers from all across the world. Today it is one of the most famous art events across the globe.

As you take a stroll, WaterFire offers a sparkling view of a hundred bonfires that blaze just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of downtown Providence. The fires form a fantastic visual treat which illuminates the nearby areas. This magnificent place offers residents and visitors an opportunity to stroll along the river, in company of the beautiful music. There are no admission charges to WaterFire.

As the event became more and more popular, WaterFire expanded in size to 81 braziers in 1998. It further added 16 braziers and the total number emerged at 97 braziers in 1999. Today, more than a hundred braziers ornament this place. Till this date, it continues to be an ever expanding unofficial summit of art lovers from all across the world.

The Woonasquatucket River is a river in the state of Rhode Island in the United States. It flows around nineteen miles and drains across a watershed of around fifty square miles. Along with the Blackstone River to its north, the Woonasquatucket was selected as a Heritage River of America in the year 1998. Both the rivers played a very crucial role in the industrial revolution, as well as the history of the Rhode Island in the nineteenth century. Evidence of this magnificent industrial history stands up in the fact that you have eighteen dams along side the length of the river as a testimony to its marvelous past.

This highly acclaimed river starts its journey from the swamps west of the Primrose Pond of the North Smithfield and flows southeast past the Primrose Pond to the Stillwater Reservoir. As it is, below the reservoir, the Woonasquatucket continues southeast, thereby providing water to a number of ponds, until going as under the Providence Place mall. Thereafter it joins the Moshassuck River in the front of One Citizens Plaza building of the downtown Providence to shape the Providence River. As it is, the lower part of the Woonasquatucket river, below the Rising Sun Dam of Olneyville is said to be tidal.

The original riverbed of Woonasquatucket river, east of Interstate 95, no longer exists and has been diverted to a man-made channel beneath the Providence Place Mall and through the Waterplace Park. In the Waterplace Park, Woonasquatucket River is also employed as a part of Waterfire.

The river crosses over from Greenville Road and Douglas Pike in North Smithfield; Farnum Pike, Old Forge Road, Farnum Pike, George Washington Highway, Capron Road, Whipple Avenue, Farnum Pike, Esmond Mill Drive and Esmond Street in Smithfield, Angell Avenue, Putnam Pike and Allendale Avenue in North Providence; Greenville Avenue in Johnston; and Glenbridge Avenue, Manton Avenue, Valley Street, Delaine Street,  Atwells Avenue, Acorn Street, Eagle Street, Dean Street, Bath Street, Interstate 95, Exchange Street, Francis Street and Steeple Street in Providence.

In addition to several unnamed tributaries, the major brooks and rivers, which feed the Woonasquatucket, include Hawkins Brook, Latham Brook, Harris Brook, Assapumpset Brook and Stillwater River.

A major development in the recent years has been the Woonasquatucket River Greenway, which is a proposed 5.7-mile chain of paths along with linear parks, which would ultimately connect the neighborhoods of Hartford, Manton, and Olneyville to the WaterPlace Park, as well as the Narragansett Bay in Providence.

The Moshassuck River is a river in the United States that flow in the Rhode Island. It flows through approximately through 16 kilometers from the town of Lincolns to the town of providence. There are six dams build over this river.

This river is not too thick if we compare it with the rivers like the American river. But how important it is can be understood by knowing the fact that there are six dams built over this river. Hence this river participate in the important jobs like electricity production, irrigation etc. as far as the electricity supply is concerned I really feel that the rivers like American river and the Mississippi river become far more important but as far as the irrigation is concerned I really feel that this river turns out to be of great help.

History
The founder of the Rhode Island or Roger Williams settled on the bank of this river. He settled at the eastern coast of the river. He was told the name of the river by the Narragansett Indians who told this name to him. The meaning of the word Moshassuck is quiet simple and that is the river where the moose watered. 

The river played a very important role in the industrial revolution. It really was the main source of running many industries. You must remember that the industrial revolution was marked by the invention of the steam engine by James watt. He was really the one who brought about the industrial revolution and for this they needed the water which was provided in this region by the river Moshassuck.

It also connects the black stone river to the lower section of the black stone canal.

By the mid of the eighteenth century the condition of the river was so bad that cholera out broke in the area surrounding it. All this really happened due to the over pollution of the river due to the industries which really used to throw all the waste and also dump of them into the river.

As far as the tributaries are concerned there is only one tributary known so far and that is the west river. This river might look small in size but the importance of this river in the region is not far behind as compared to the Blackstone River which is another river in the region. I must say that this river is another river which really does a lot of good work during the industrial revolution. You must have heard a lot about the black stone river but I must tell you that the Moshassuck is also not far behind. It is really one of the rivers anyhow which really did lots of good during the industrial revolution.

The Providence Journal, also known as ProJo, is a daily newspaper, which caters to the metropolitan area of Providence, Rhode Island. It is also, the largest newspaper in Rhode Island. The newspaper was first published in 1829 and today, it is the oldest continually published daily newspaper in the United States. The newspaper has won four Pulitzer Prizes.

It was later on purchased in 1996 by the Belo Corporation, which is a Dallas based media company, handling over twenty television stations. The company was earlier known as A.H. Belo after one of the early owners of the company. The company is the oldest continually-operated corporation in the state of Texas.

Earlier, the Providence Journal Co. operated as a diversified communications company with operations in television broadcasting, newspaper publishing, and programming and new media ventures. The company owned and operated nine network-affiliated television stations at Honolulu and Tucson. It also published a newspaper under the name, ‘the Journal’. The Providence Journal Co. operates as a subsidiary of A. H. Belo Corporation.

Way back in 1829, the journal started its origin as The Providence Daily Journal. By the year 1864, the Journal had begun publishing the afternoon paper, i.e. The Evening Bulletin. Another interesting feature in regard to this journal is that in the year 1872 the first diner in America was founded to serve the employees of the Providence Journal. It was a horse drawn wagon, which served hot food.

Later on, the Journal dropped the word Daily from its name in 1920 and became The Providence Journal. In 1992, however, the Bulletin was discontinued and its name was appended onto that of the morning paper, i.e. The Providence Journal-Bulletin. With the beginning of its online service in 1995, the Journal established projo.com in 1996. In 1998, the paper’s name was shortened back to The Providence Journal.

It is good to see a great newspaper like Providence journal in good hands. With Mr. Stephen Hamblett as the chairperson and Mr. Thomas N. Matlack as the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance , along with Mr. Jack C. Clifford, as the Executive Vice President of Broadcasting Programming & Electronic Media, it does not come as a surprise to see Providence journal scaling new heights. Also, Mr. Harry Dyson, the Secretary and Treasurer and Mr. John L. Hammond, Chief Administrative Officer, are some of the most widely respected people in the industry.

1. First of all, you will have to fill up an Adopt-A-Highway application. This form outlines all the obligations involved in adopting a highway and lets you request specific sections of roadway. You will be required to sign the form and return it to a Rhode Island Adopt-A-Highway coordinator.

2. You will then have to obtain the required safety training and information provided by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. By this time around, you can decide what name you would like written on your two free Adopt-A-Highway signs.

3. The next step involves Notification to the maintenance facility in your area at least five days before a scheduled cleanup, who would provide you with the necessary safety vests, work gloves, trash bags and safety warning signs.

4. You will also have to designate a safety leader for your group, who will ensure that group members stay safe and that the “Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup Crew” warning signs remain upright within a mile of each working group member. This is very much necessary for maintaining your safety.

5. Leave filled trash bags at the highway work site and notify your maintenance facility that they are ready for pickup. With this, submit a cleanup report card, either online or by mail, after each cleanup session.

By cleaning up the highway, you will do a great service to this magnificent place. As it is, being a responsible citizen, I do not think, you would shy away from this responsibility.

This is also a major tourist attraction of the area. The building houses a museum, which displays the prosperity of Post revolutionary prosperity, apart from a brilliant collection of art pieces. Hailed by John Quincy Adams, as the most magnificent mansion on the continent, the John Brown House is a place you can not simply miss, if you are in Rhode Island.

4. RISD Museum
Rhode Island School of Design or RISD is by far, one of the finest museums of the country.  With a collection of more than 80,000 objects, which includes precious paintings by well known artists, along with furniture, costumes and modern works of art, the RISD museum is a place you can not miss.

5. Roger Williams Park & Zoo
If you are a nature lover, then Rhode Island offers you an escapade in the cozy environs of nature in the form of Roger William Park and Zoo. Here, you can enjoy the vast areas of beautiful green lawns, lakes and copses.
